Understanding Wave Action

Low & Gentle

Characteristics

  • Strong swash, weak backwash
  • Builds up beaches (deposition)
  • Low wave height, long wavelength
  • Low frequency (6-8 per minute)

Longshore Drift

Longshore drift is the zigzag movement of sediment along a coastline. It is driven by the prevailing wind direction causing waves to approach the beach at an angle.

  • Swash carries material up the beach at an angle.
  • Backwash carries material straight down the beach under gravity.
